Asbestos Abatement and Designated Substance Surveys

Asbestos is a generic term that refers to a group of naturally occurring fibrous mineral silicates. Friable asbestos refers to materials which can be readily crumbled using hand pressure. Non-friable material refers to asbestos which is associated with a binding agent (such as tar or cement), that prevents the ready release of airborne fibres. Friable asbestos is commonly found in boiler and pipe insulation. Non-friable or bound asbestos is typically found in roofing tars, floor and drywall compound, plaster and precast asbestos cement products commonly referred to as “transite”.

Asbestos exposure is known to cause significant adverse effects in humans including Mesothelioma, Asbestosis, and Lung Cancer. Once the asbestos fibres enter a humans lungs, they bind to the tissue and cannot be removed. We offer services to identify and safely remove asbestos and asbestos containing materials from buildings. We manage projects and work with professional, licensed asbestos remediation contractors.

Individual designated substance regulations have been developed for eleven (11) chemical contaminants and are enforced by the Ministry of Labour under the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario. Problems can result from building demolition activities, renovations, or any other building disturbance. Designated substances include Asbestos, Lead, and Mercury.

We can conduct a Designated Substance Survey (DSS) in any building to identify if these substances exist, and if they do, how to safely and effectively remove them to eliminate potential liability.
