A major storm in the summer of 2009 overloaded the outdated Hamilton sewer systems resulting in a large volume of sewer backup claims in homes. We were asked to respond quickly to perform mould assessments to identify pre-existing mould problems for insurers. Mould grows within days following wet conditions, so the time frame for drying to avoid mould is short, and our inspections needed to be quick as well. New damage could then be separated from the old mould which was not covered by insurers. In addition to the mould issues, the sewage introduced bacterial contamination into basements. We conducted swabbing to identify contaminated areas, and provided protocols for remediation of those areas. Clearance testing following remediation was required before re-occupying the damaged homes. With lots of tear out in old finished basements, concerns for asbestos containing materials were present. We conducted a number of asbestos assessments and provided abatement protocols where the materials were found.
